[Tennis- ATP Stuttgart] 16.6/ 16:00 H.Hurkacz- Ch.O'Connell
Hubert Hurkacz has spent 2023 on a warpath against short tennis matches. Of the 32 he’s played, the over has hit on 24 of them. Of the 25 best-of-3 matches he’s played, the over has hit on 18, and he’s been over this specific amount (23.5 games) on 17 of them. Across those 25, 14 of them have been three-setters (effectively an automatic over), and even of the 11 that went two sets, four of those managed to hit an over.
Of the 97 sets he’s played in those 32 total matches, 41 of them have needed at least 12 games to be decided, and 34 of them have gone to a tiebreak (13 games). With those tiebreaks being near-coin flips (he is 18-16 in them), they have extended matches against guys Hurkacz probably should be beating.
So it goes when you have one of the biggest serves on the tour and you aren’t a great returner. And this is all magnified on grass, where his serve (and the other guy’s) can absolutely fly. In his match on Wednesday, Hurkacz needed three sets and 36 games to secure a win, and there was only one break of serve from either guy in the entire match. Against O’Connell, who also has a nice serve and probably won’t be able to hang with Hurkacz’s too often, we are probably in for some more long sets.
