[Tennis- WTA Madrid] 25.4/ 16:00 L.Zhu- R.Marino
Neither of these players is really that great on Clay, with hard courts being the best surface for them but they've played each other a lot in recent times and Zhu just seems to have a specific playstyle that counters Marino for the most part.
Marino is a player that wasted most of her prime years by making a huge pause in her career before coming back in 2018. She's quite tall, heavily reliant on her 1st serve which is somewhat powerful and plays some agressive tennis always searching for a winner. She is pressed to play this way because her movement is really weak and she doesn't have the endurance to sustain herself in long matches, especially now at the age of 32.
Zhu is quite the opposite. She can hold herself in longer rallies and has a decent defense to attack transition so shot variation is something that she can use against this opponent especially on Clay. Even if these two never faced each other on the surface, she should be the one with the best physicality to win a 3 set battle and to make Marino play some extra shots that can drain the canadian's stamina. Zhu is also in a much better place right now, after making a great Hard court season with deep runs in Monterrey, Auckland and a 4th round appearance at the Australian Open, beating Sakkari in the first Grand Slam of the year.
Zhu leads the head-to-head by 3-1, with the chinese player winning their latest clashes at the Australian Open and in Monterrey which has a similar altitude to Madrid. If Zhu was able to hold Marino in the canadian's best surface I'm confident that she can have an even easier time on the Clay courts against such a one dimensional player.
