[Handball- Champions League] 8.12/ 18:45 THW Kiel-Nantes
On this fine Thursday evening we're headed to the Champions League where Nantes will travel to Kiel in the Champions League.
Nantes are playing some excellent handball lately, they beat Aalborg confidently at home and in the french Starligue they're played just below PSG and Montpellier, as expected.
These two teams met in November in Nantes, where the frenchmen won 38-30 comfortably. They also met in 2021 which was a 26-26 draw, and in 2020 where Nantes won 35-27 in Kiel.
Kiel definitely meets a higher quality of opponents on a week to week basis, but Nantes really steps it up in the champions league. Offensively they've proved able to break through pretty solid defenses, and if you look at the post match scorecards you'll notice that they don't rely on one specific player to score 10+ goals to win. They're quite flexible with a deep bench. If you compare it to the NBA, where sometimes a star player on an average team has to score 40+ to win, they're the opposite of that!
Nantes generally put a lot of pace and pressure early on. For first halves, they've won against FC Barcelona(but lost the match), in fact if you look at all of their losses this season, they've come after winning or at least drawing the first half.
A common tactic is to basically let Nantes set the pace of the match and let them run themselves tired by the second half. Kiel will definitely not let them loose with 3-4 goal leads, but I think they're OK trying to suck the pressure out and will be tactically okayish with keeping it fairly close and not gas themselves out in the first half.
