This is a fight for the British light middleweight title. Both of these fighters have been on quite different paths with Kelly a decent amateur who was pushed into tough fights quickly, whereas Williamson started out on small hall shows and has worked hard to build his way up to mainstream TV cards.
Both of them to me are quite fragile fighters at this point. Kelly, since his beatdown stoppage defeat to Avanesyan has fought twice at light middleweight and has looked pretty average, especially in his last fight which also showed he’d lost some of his quick reflexes. Williamson since his war with Ted Cheeseman (I highly recommend watching that fight even if it’s just the highlights) has not looked the same to me. He fought a journeyman in his last fight and didn’t particularly look good, also in the fight previous to that he was knocked down and hurt multiple times by Mason Cartwright, who isn’t a big puncher and it was a fight most expected Williamson to just breeze through.
There’s a number of ways I see this fight going. For Williamson he’s a big puncher with 14 ko’s in his 20 fights. He’s naturally the much bigger man, in his last fight he weighed 168 pounds which is three weights higher then Kelly’s previous weight. He’s an aggressive fighter and for me Kelly lacks that dog, so I definitely can see him throwing Kelly into deep waters. Against Avanesyan, Kelly folded quite quickly when the Russian started to up the pressure, which included a lot of body shots and he eventually stopped Kelly in the 6th round. For Josh Kelly, he is definitely the more schooled fighter, he has the better amateur pedigree and he probably has the speed advantage too. He has fought higher level fighters as well, even though he skipped the domestic level so it wouldn’t be a surprise to me to see him look a level above Williamson. Williamson has pretty poor defence so I expect Kelly to land quite frequently.
There is a bit of dislike towards each other too which should add to it being more of a firefight. I think we’ll either see Williamson mauling down Kelly or Kelly looking a level above Williamson landing on him at will to get the stoppage win. With the most notable factors of Williamson’s poor defence, both fighters highly questionable chins and Kelly’s overall grit, I don’t see this fight going the full 12 rounds.
