[Football- Champions League] 25.10/ 21:00 Benfica- Juventus
Both teams are pretty much household names in modern day football, whereas I think you can easily argue Juventus has been the better and more accomplished team for the past decade. Having said that, this is by far the worst Juventus has been over the past 8-10 years. Having by far been the most dominant force in Italy winning 6 league titles in the past 8 years, they have been regressing the past 3 years. Finishing 4th the 2 years prior and currently (rightfully) residing at the #8 spot in the league. It's been both (relatively) bad transfers as well as the fact that they are currently riddled with injuries that have caused for them to be in the state they are right now.
Benfica on the other hand have been on a different level this year as they have yet to lose a game and come of a great 1-0 win away against Porto in O Classico further cementing their brilliant run of form so far. This leaves them at 17 wins and 3 draws so far in league games. In this impressive streak Benfica have managed to win 8 out of their last 9 home games, with the sole draw being against PSG (a result they also managed to pull away against PSG) which is very impressive to say the least.
Now obviously, this is a Champions League game, not a domestic game for either team, however I think these trends are definitely very important to take into consideration when looking at this game. In their group Benfica currently sits at #2 and Juventus sits in the 3rd spot. Juventus have only managed to win once which was against Macabbi Haifa. To put it simply, losing to them would simply be laughable and a straight up embarassment. Juventus however managed to win the game at home, but was sent back from Israel losing 2-0 only 2 weeks ago. What I do have to admit is that 2-0 was a tad flattered and a 2-2 game was definitely possible, regardless of this a team such as Juventus should not be struggling against a team such as Maccabi Haifa.
In their h2h earlier this year, where Juventus hosted Benfica, Benfica went home victorious with a 2-1 victory and having watched that game I honestly think Benfica should have scored at least once more in the first half, simply proving they were the better team that game. Tonight Benfica will have the home advantage.Winning tonight would secure Benfica a top 2 finish in their current group, with remaining hope of even topping it, but this is dependent on PSG's results. Finishing off I will just reiterate on Juventus' bad away form, out of their 7 away games so far this season, they only managed to win their latest, draw twice in total and lose the rest. You could argue they have been playing better lately having won both of their last 2 games, but neither of these teams are as good as Benfica is and I think at 2.1 this is very generous from the bookmakers.
