[Boxing- Mexico] 23.10/ 3:00 M.Lara- J.Sanmartin
Back in February 2021, Mexico’s Mauricio “Bronco” Lara delivered a severe beating and ninth round knockout of undefeated Josh Warrington, many assumed that the career of the star of this great away performance would be catapulted to continued big fights and even stardom. However, with the exception of certain names who are treated as the eyes and ears of the industry’s elite, things don’t usually come so easy for the hard-earned fighters.
Although there are boxers who are not willing to give a rematch even after very controversial verdicts, Lara had to face a new fight in the UK in September 2021 against Warrington, one of the biggest pound-for-pound specialists in head-butting (along with Gary Antonio Russell) and who used this resource to cut the Mexican and bring the fight to a no-win conclusion in the second round.
After this disappointing finish and a shootout against Emilio Sanchez, on paper Lara was given a good opportunity again in the British Isles against Leigh Wood. However, Wood suffered an injury that was questioned by many, which prevented the match-up of two UK highlights and led to “Bronco’s” career continuing to stagnate through no fault of his own.
As a consolation for this latest setback, Lara will have one more shooting bout headlining a Matchroom Boxing event from his home country, specifically from the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City, Mexico. His opponent will be Colombian Jose “El General” Sanmartin, who is not exactly the most fortunate boxer either.
Defeats by questionable decision, a controversial disqualification against Tomas Rojas and a knockout in the last round of a meritorious performance against Emanuel Navarrete are some of the results that have marked Sanmartin’s career. Even so, after a win in Mexico against David Carmona last year, Sanmartin enters this featherweight bout in which, depending on his performance, he could get closer to more relevant fights.
