Today we got Köln taking on recently promoted Schalke. In Köln’s last 5 games, They’ve won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. This includes a 4-0 win against Austria Lustenau, a 5-0 win against NEC Nijmegen, and a 2-0 win against Kickers Offenbach. And only lost in regular time to AC Milan (the most recent Serie A winner) in a close game 2-1, where they had more possession,shots, and shots on goal. They’ve scored 14 goals in their last 5 matches and have conceded 4.

Schalke was recently just promoted from Bundesliga 2. They’ve played subpar recently against decent teams. They’ve scored 8 goals in their last 5 matches but have conceded 7 to teams that are aren’t close to the skill level of Köln, such as Meppen and Augsburg. In their last 5 games, they’ve drawn 2, lost 2 and only won 1. They drew against Augsburg and Salerntina, 2 decent teams. Lost to FC Twente and Meppen and only beat Bremer who play in the Regionalliga, which is the fourth level of professional football in Germany.

Köln’s preseason has been decent, however, they’ve been tested more than Schalke. They’ve played well in mostly all their games and I would say they’ve only played poor in their most recent game against Jahn Regensburg where they drew in 90 and lost in pens in the DFB Pokal.

I believe Köln has had a tougher schedule than Schalke and it should show when the two go head to head. I think they look to bounce back here after a tough DFB pokal loss and Köln walks away with a win in their first game of the new Bundesliga season.
