Both players have quite similar results in Clay mostly because they've played a ton of matches in the Challenger Tour for different reasons. As we know Gaston is still 21 years old and only played 48 matches in the ATP tour but his best surface is Clay without a doubt. The french is known for his unique style of play. He is left handed so he uses the wide serve quite frequently and does some great dropshots while also using the slice to change the pace of the point. I would say that he lacks some power, his 2nd serve is way too weak and sometimes his head just seems to be in another place so all of a sudden you lose your bets on him outta nowhere
We heard some rumours that Karatsev was involved in match fixing with 2 matches that he played while in charge of his former coach Yahor Yatsyk in 2019 and 2020 but he was rank 289 and rank 112 at that time and these are still yet to be confirmed. Even if in fact he did these type of things I'm sure that after his breakout year in 2021 where he became rank 18 he was not involved in any more scandals because it would make no sense at all
He is having a bad 2022 season just like Gaston but he played really well against Sonego on the 1st round here in Bastad and after a long time I could finally remember the 2021 Karatsev where he would just delete his opponents with so much firepower from the forehand and the backhand. I think this matchup is a 70/30 in favor of Karatsev
Gaston's 2nd serve is a huge weakness and Karatsev is way better in both serve and return so I could see the russian having too much time to prepare his powerful groundstrokes on a slow surface like this and to be able to break his opponent in some occasions.
