[Football- Spain "La Liga'] 13.9/ 21:00 Valencia- Levante
The La Liga opening weekend hasn't exactly been full of thrills and spills so far with four of the six clubs in action failing to even score but we hope for more on Sunday when Valencia play Levante in an 8pm BST clash at the Mestalla. These two sides had to settle for mid-table mediocrity last season but will be hoping to improve on that and begin this season with a win here.
Valencia had been flirting with the prospect of qualifying for Europe last season with the Champions League even a potential aim but a dire end to the campaign that saw just 3 wins from their last 12 matches extinguished those aspirations. Former Watford head coach Javi Gracia has been appointed to try and change the club's fortunes this season. A number of high profile departures have been a blow with Rodrigo leaving for Leeds, Ferran Torres departing for Manchester City, and Francis Coquelin exiting the club for Villarreal. No real additions so far leaves us feeling that the team is generally a lot weaker. There is a lot of pressure on Kevin Gameiro and Maxi Gomez to deliver the goals.
Levante have been a team punching above their weight for a while and head coach Paco Lopez will look to push the team closer to the promised land of European qualification this year. Transfer activity has been limited with the only arrival being Mickael Malsa on a free from Mirandes but the key factor is that nobody has left. It allows Lopez to begin this season with a consistent and solid squad. The team lost just 3 of their final 10 league matches last season so there's no reason why they will feel they can't continue that positive form.
Both teams have scored in the last six encounters between these two sides so hopefully we'll see more goals here than we have in previous La Liga matches this weekend so far. I'm concerned at the lack of additions made by Valencia but it's easy to forget that the transfer window is still open for another month. It's not ideal preparation though. You'd like to think clubs would have a lot of their squad settled by the opening game. I think this is a game Levante will feel they can take something from and I believe they will.
