[Boxing- USA] 25.2/ 23:00 M.Subriel- J.Ponce
This fight has war written all over it. Both fighters are aggressive, mid to inside range brawlers. The big factor here though is, Matias is just that bit better in every department than Ponce. Matias has fought way better opposition, he’s took the 0 of three respectable opponents and in his last fight got redemption by impressively stopping Ananyan. Ponce is 30-0 but with that record has just one decent win, being against Lewis Ritson. But the Ritson win doesn’t really come near to the wins Matias has had, which shows the difference in quality of opposition both men have had. They both also have a familiar opponent in journeyman Jonathan Jose Eniz. Ponce was dropped and hurt by Eniz but went on to win a tight 10 round UD win, whereas Matias stopped Eniz in 5 rounds.
Attribute wise Matias comes out on top in almost everything for me. He has incredible combination punching, good movement especially when he’s on the offense, throws extremely sharp body shots, has a good engine and excels fighting both inside and at mid range. Ponce throws good body shots himself and for a tall fighter he is fast. His high guard is also pretty tight.
Conclusion: I expect this to play out one way since it’s the only way both guys know how to fight. I think Matias will be the one mainly on the front foot but both fighters will be trading at close range throughout. The big problem I see for Ponce is how much body he gives Matias to aim at, and I think we’ll quickly see Matias opening up that guard with body to head shots. Matias has 18 ko’s in his 18 wins and he will eventually break his opponent down through his sheer punch volume and I think Ponce will eventually fold. Ponce’s build up for this has been pretty shocking with 2 easy ko wins against absolute cans, whereas Matias has constantly been fighting top quality fighters and he’s looked better and better in every one of them. I think Matias overall will have too much for Ponce, I see the early rounds being very close and then Matias will eventually take over from round 4 onwards, going on to get a stoppage and pick up the vacant world title.
