Having been solidly ranked between 10 and 20 in the world for a couple of seasons, Mertens has slowly begun to slip down the rankings, currently finding herself at number 37. Her results, particularly on hard courts, have been poor over the past 12 months. Whilst she (barely) holds a winning record over this period (19-18 on hard), the quality of those victories have not been convincing. Only two of those 19 victories have been against top 30 opponents, one of which was as a result of her opponent retiring from the match. Her overall record against top 30 players on hard in the past 12 months is 2-8.
Camila Giorgi has a big, powerful game, but is known to be wildly inconsistent, which is why she has never cracked the world’s top 20 despite having the talent to do so. She is, however, the defending champion in this tournament, and should have enough to be able to beat Mertens today.
