Caruso hasn't played since his controversial loss against Fognini in AO, while Mager played a clay court tournament in Argentina and lost to Cerundolo. After Watching tape on their matches in AO I was much more impressed with Caruso's play against Laaksonen and Fognini over Mager's against AO's Cinderella Karatsev. Mager comes into this match on a 4 game losing streak and 3-5 in his last 8, while Caruso is 4-4 including good wins over Auger-Alliasime and Sandgren.
H2H Caruso leads 5-2, although Mager did win the most recent matchup in 2019. Overall I believe Caruso is the better player on any surface and should be able to win this match. The only thing that might be in his way is the hard court-clay court transition but hopefully he settles in quickly.
