[Football- Spain 'La Liga'] 19.1/ 21:00 Alaves- Cadiz
This game is very important. Alaves are 13th with 20 pts, Cádiz is 18th with 15 pts. Cádiz are having a terrible season, but out of the two games they won, one of them was against Alavés at home (1-0). For Cádiz it would be a lifeline to get 3 points here and Alavés could either distance themselves in the coming two game weeks from a relegation fight or drag themselves into one by dropping points vs Cádiz & Almeria.
What stands out for me is the following: Cádiz losing 2-0 vs Granada away (19th placed) & losing 1-4 at home vs Valencia. It’s a team that feels like it has run its course in La Liga – all these seasons of barely surviving catching up with them and not having the financial means to reinforce the team in the winter.
Alaves lost 2-0 vs Athletic in the cup, but it’s hard to say if there’s shame in that. Their other results have been outstanding: a 1-1 tie vs La Real & a 2–3-win vs Sevilla, also in a relegation fight. They eliminated Real Betis from the cup with a 1-0 win in the round prior to this week. Prior to the winter break, they could’ve gotten away with a 0-0 against Real Madrid too (red card somewhere in the second half), if it weren’t for a last-minute winner.
The reality is that a lot of these teams such as Almeria (0-0 vs Girona), Sevilla (1-3 win in the cup vs Getafe), Granada (2-0 vs the very same Cádiz), Celta (2-1 last minute winner vs Real Betis, 1-1 vs Real Mallorca, 3-1-win vs Valencia in the cup) – they’re going to be fighting like wounded lions for their points & their season. I trust Cádiz to do the same, but my gut says there’s not enough talent & football there. Cádiz have won 0 games away from home.
