Another first round match in the Dubai Duty Free Championship, where winner of the Qatar open, Khachanov (-500) faces off against Van Assche (+350) for the first time in their career.

The Qatar final was Khachanov’s last match where he won in straight sets against the up and coming 18 y/o Mensik (87) who beat Rublev (5), Murray (50), and Monfils (70) to get to the final.

Khachanov has yet to drop a set winning 6 straight after losing to Dimitrov (13) in a close 3 set match at the Open 13 Final.

His opponent Van Assche, has won 3 sets and lost 8 in his last 5 matches. The Frenchman recently played two matches on Feb 24 (same day as Khach’s final) to qualify for this tournament where he won one and lost another to Martener (97). Van Assche also participated in the Qatar Open where he lost in the first round to Cressy (182).

While Van Assche was able to reach the Third Round in the Aussie Open, he’s followed that up with straight set exists in first rounds or qualifiers. Going up against an in-form Khachanov, who’s greatly improved his serve since last year, the Russian should have enough firepower to deal with their first encounter in straight sets.
