Both players are quite explosive and have a similar playstyle of trying to hit the ball really hard in every groundstroke they take. This can lead to fantastic one way performances or a game full of unforced errors. Ostapenko for me, is just better than Collins at all these aspects of their similar playstyles and she’s been having a decent american hard court season, reaching the quarterfinals at the US Open, only losing to the eventual winner Coco Gauff.
Collins has the home crowd with her here in San Diego but her US Open campaign was not good, since she lost to Mertens in the 2nd round. At this tournament, she was able to beat Chirico but I won’t put too much credit on that win, with how much better she is compared to this opponent. Ostapenko had a difficult match in the 1st round, but it was against Alexandrova and after putting up a fight, I think she’s quite focused in getting a good campaign at this tournament.
The market is pricing this match at almost 50/50 odds purely by the fact that these two players can be inconsistent but Ostapenko’s quality is higher than Collins and her US Open run shows good and consistent results recently so I think there’s value on her side.
