[Football- England 'Premier League'] 3.9/ 15:00 Liverpool FC- Aston Villa

Today I’m looking at potentially a more riskier pick but there’s a few reasons why I’m backing this. Liverpool host Aston Villa at Anfield for an early kickoff, and they’re good form following a 2-1 win with 10 men for the majority of the match against Newcastle, and a 3-1 win against Bournemouth, with also 10 men for a good part of the match. They began their season with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Villa have started decently with one loss and two wins, the loss being a 5-1 thrashing away at Newcastle, and they followed this with a 3-1 win over Burnley and a 4-0 win over Everton. They are a well-coached team with some serious attacking talent but there’s a few reasons why I think they won’t be able to hang in with Liverpool and I will talk about this below.

Liverpool have a very good record against Villa, winning 9 of the last 11 meetings between the teams, and Villa have failed to win in their last 5 away appearances at Anfield. Liverpool for me are potentially title contenders, and one of the few teams that I can see challenging City throughout the season. I have been watching this team for a very very long time but it’s been while since there was so much raw talent in this team. Their midfield revamp has been fantastic, with new additions Szoboszlai, McAllister, Endo, and recently arrived Gravenberch. Szobo and McAllister have already totally changed the look of the Liverpool midfield, which looks full of energy. The attacking prowess of the team of course is where Liverpool shines, but I think Aston Villa’s midfield is oftentimes overrun by better teams (such as their first game vs. NUFC) and I think we may see something similar here. When Villa plays poorly, it’s a lot of the time because there’s just no cohesion between the attack and defense, and the midfield goes missing.

Yes, Liverpool are missing VVD and Konate, but Matip and Gomez put in a very good shift with a man down against Newcastle and both players have a point to prove. Aston Villa are also missing Tyrone Mings, which is a pretty big hit, as he is one of their most physical players, Liverpool’s attack will look to capitalize on this. Look for Darwin Nunez, (if he starts) to have a serious impact. The best way for Liverpool to win is to sit back and absorb pressure and hit on the counter, this especially plays into Nunez and the wingers’ strengths, wouldn’t be surprised if this is Klopp’s approach.

Both these teams are more than capable of scoring, but this match comes down to which offense you think can put up more goals against these weakened defenses. I’m betting on Liverpool to ultimately score more this match. The home crowd will be a factor as it always is in Anfield, they should see this out.
