[Football- Iceland 'Premier League'] 1.10/ 21:00 Víkingur Reykjavík – KR Reykjavík

KR Reykjavík are the current champions of the premier league. There is no doubt that they are winners and know how to play football. KR head coach Rúnar Kristinsson has won the league 2 times with KR, then moved on to a club level competition in Belgium before return home again. And just an added trivia bonus – Rúnars son, Axel, recently signed for Arsenal after the departure of goalkeeper Martinez. But why have KR been so bad this season? I have reviewed their season while searching for an explanation and found 2 factors. The first one is champion league football. KR show a noticeable dip in performance in the matches surrounding UEFA games. Firstly they try to rest main players before the match and then when they get home, they need to quarantine because of COVID-19. This they have done 2 times, and 2 times their performance has dropped. Second reason is the prolonged season. KR are one of the few clubs that play on regular grass, and regular grass just can’t handle the Icelandic weather in late September/beginning of October. I watched their last match at home and the ball was sometimes 50% rolling and 50% floating. With both these factors removed for the match against Vikingur, I do favor them to win. KR won the previous meeting 2-0 and their current form is 2W 1D 2L.

Looking at Víkingur Reykjavík, there are some draw backs to the team. Their homegrown and national hero Kári Árnason CB for Icelandic national team will be sidelined for this match, he’s recovering from an injury and is trying to get fit for next international match. Their other homegrown hero Óttar K. recently signed for Venezia in Italy and left the club 2 weeks ago. He had managed 9 goals in 14 games. Víkingur is thus missing their best defender and main goal scorer this season. They play on artificial grass which is just what clubs want at this time. Víkingur most recent form Is 2D and 3L. Furthermore Víkingur seems to struggle against top teams, by that I mean teams that we believe will challenge for the title every season and víkingur collects most of their points from the lower end teams.
